This is my rare find of the year - a Max Neiger Egyptian Revival brooch from the 1930s. It is pictured on the dust cover of the book, "Egyptian Revival:Jewelry and Design" by Nichols, Foote and Allison, and it is also pictured inside the book. For those who do not know the story, the Neiger Brothers were in business in Gablonz, Czechoslovakia, in the 1930s and they made a lot of pieces with Egyptian and Oriental Designs. Unfortunately both of the brothers were killed in the concentration camps during the war, and the company was never revived. So, the pieces are very rare and difficult to bome by. Too many people assume Neiger with every Egyptian revival piece they list, but real Neiger pieces are easily recognized by those who study them, by the perfection of even the tiniest detail, the filigree backs and the delicate enameling. They are never marked Neiger but they are sometimes marked Czechoslovakia as is this one. The brooch is 2 1/2" x 1 3/4". It is is very good condition with some paint loss, and a tiny crack that does not go all the way through on the curved glass piece on the right hand side as you face the picture. You have to really look to see it. All in all, it is a fine collector's piece and very hard to find.
